(Volunteers pitch in to stem epidemic from San Jose Mercury News)
On Saturday December 1st, some volunteers gathered in Downtown San Jose to commemorate World AIDS Day. Presently “an estimated 33 million people worldwide have HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Since 1998, more than 25 million have died.” (San Jose Mercury News: Volunteers pitch in to step epidemic, 12/04/2007) In Africa, the number one disease that kills thousands of people is AIDS.
The Journey, a church in San Jose, organized an event to accumulate kits packed with necessary materials for the caregivers who volunteered to go to the villages in Africa to cure people. The kits include tubs of Vaseline to heal their dehydrated skin, anti-fungal creams to remedy skin lesions, anti-bacterial soap, washcloths and anti-diarrhea medication. Since there’s rarely any electricity in Africa, flashlights and batteries were included as well. On the ritual there were discourses about the deadly disease, AIDS. Assistants also included a little note inside for the caregivers to read, thanking them for volunteering to go to those villages and curing those people.
