Police and investigators say that the fatal shooting of a man and a boy hurt from the shooting are connected because they both have some gang overtones and other details they wouldn’t disclose. The victim was identified as Ernesto Jerez, 28 years old, who was shot Monday around 10:40 pm. He had died at Highland Hospital at 11:16 pm.
The 16 year old boy whose name was not released was shot on Tuesday at 12:30 am.
Both of the killings were “drive-bys” and police think they were from the same vehicle. There were other three occupants after that they were interviewed and they did not know why they were shot at.
The Jerez killing was Oakland’s 114th homicide of the year. Oakland was also the fourth most dangerous city in the U.S. The 14th annual “city crime rankings” was published based on the FBI’s crime statistics report on September 24th. The study drew harsh criticism before it came out. The report looked at 378 cities and at least 75,000 people based on per-capita rates for homicides, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, and burglary and auto theft.
