Taking School Seriously

Volume 4: January / February

By: Yara Hidalgo

Why is it that students, in general, don’t take school seriously? Do most of them just show up because they have to and it’s required by law? Why can’t students take advantage of the free education the United States gives us? There are many students in Mexico, as well as in other countries, who would love to have that privilege where they don’t have to pay to attend high school. Poor families, in Central America and South America, can’t afford for their children to go to high school because the tuition rate is high.

It bothers me that many students simply don’t try, and I’m pretty sure it bothers some of my classmates as well. I understand that some students have things easier than others but that shouldn’t keep anyone from achieving or accomplishing their goals. There are many students who fall into victim mentality where they think they can’t do anything about the way they live, and therefore feel they can’t do anything about it. Nothing will be easy, pretty soon we will be entering the journey of independence, where one will no longer depend on the parents and have to do whatever it takes to become better people. Life is tough and we have to work really hard to get what we want. Our parents want what’s best for us and we have to take our education into consideration and make something out of it. I may be sounding like your parent(s) or teacher(s), or maybe even grandparent(s) but it is good advice; maybe it will help if a peer tells you this.

Students, you are in high school, and in a few years you will become young adults and hopefully won’t have to depend on anybody but yourself. One needs to merit by one’s own self and stay firm for what’s ahead of us, because there are many journeys we will become across. Basically do your work, stay in school, and be involved in school activities as they will help evolve you as the person you seek to become.
